In order to have the dreamed space, it is best to know what you want and how you want it. It seems easy but sometimes that is what complicates us most.
So here are some ideas of how much you could do to start your own sewing workshop at home and, of course. The 9 materials that cannot be missing when you start.
Your Home, Your Workshop
When I think about how I wanted it to be my sewing workshop and all the sewing workshops we have helped build at home; The first and most important thing to consider is space.
Many people underestimate this profession. But the truth is that many small spaces are required to store all sorts of things in different sizes. When we analyze the situation, we realize that a wall full of bookshelves is not enough and the more prosperous the workshop, the more space you will need.
That is why, in order to get off to a good start, it is best to think about that prosperous future that will lead to expansion. By having that positive mindset, you will not only call success, but at the same time you will be more than ready for the great changes to come.
So let's talk first about the basic materials you'll need and then prepare the space together. Thanks to the ideas that we will give you, you will surely find the formula that will best suit your needs.
You may already have several of these, in that case do not buy more, at least for now, we will first organize ourselves and; If you start from scratch, do not worry, we will accompany you all the way while you take those baby steps and very soon you will be running.
Rules
These are special to make the strokes in the fabric or paper and will help you a lot. In fact they are adapted to the type of work that is done within the workshop, they are not common rules.
I usually do the strokes on paper and then using that pattern as a guide I make the final cut on the canvas. Remember that I do not have my own workshop, so I'm going the safe way. But surely over time you can make the strokes directly on the fabric.
Among the most important rules I can mention the ones I always use:
- Graduation. Very useful that I use because it is transparent and comes in both inches and centimeters.
- French- Tailor
These last two are the special ones for sewing, they can be very cheap in plastic; But the metal ones will last for years, which one to buy is your decision.
Measuring tape
From one side in inches and the other side in centimeters. Thanks to their flexibility they are very practical, but be very careful how you store them! Do not roll it tightly because when it is extended, little by little, the material will expand. This causes the measurements to cease to be exact.
Clay (For fabric marking)
It is an amazing material because it allows tracing marks on the fabric without leaving permanent evidence. They come in many beautiful colors and everything will depend on what you like.
Personally I recommend the white one. It is the only one that has never left a minimum of residue of color when cleaning the fabric.
I recommend using one side always and reserve the other to draw really thin lines when you need them.
Pins
They will never be enough, remember that one of the best ways to store them is in a pincushion. Try to have one for each type of pin depending on the shape of the head and length.
Scissors
GLONDEN RULE: If you are going to buy cloth scissors, use them exclusively for fabric.
That's why I say scissors in the plural. You will need some to cut the patterns on the paper and then others to cut the fabric as such.
Take care of your scissors, love your scissors.
Thread
I know it is too obvious to name them but it is necessary to think of all the details before preparing space for the sewing machine and the cutting board.
As with pins, you should buy it whenever you can. Regardless of the brand, the best thing to start is to test the different types of thread.
It might be because of my lack of experience but; I've never worked with a type of thread that seems "the best". That is why beyond brand I look for shades.
If you will have an over-lock sewing machine, remember that you will not need one or two reels but three. At the same time you should always have the small reels on hand.
Needles
Just as obvious as the thread. But you will not need as many as the pins! Yet be conscious that depending on the type of fabric you are going to work on you might thicker or thinner needles. I was very surprised when I saw that a needle could break so easily!
Seam Ripper
Instead of using scissors you can use this little friend; I love it and it has spared me a lot of headaches. Buy one yourself too!
Iron
Your ally by excellence in order to be able to sew correctly according to the pattern. The bigger the better; As long as it is handy and you do not get tired of using it because of its weight.
It may be a good idea not to use the same iron that you use to sew in your laundry. Actually the weight can affect you.
The sewing machine
As for this subject I will only focus on the straight machine. It is true that over locks are wonderful but, all that I have ever needed to do I’ve achieved it with a straight and I can speak with much ground on them.
I recommend you to start with a very small sewing machine which has a warranty. Pay especially attention to is serial number; according to its serial you can verify that it is still in line of production in the matter of manufacture. This in order to be 100% sure that you will get the necessary pieces and refractions in case you need them.
There are many sewing machines that come with "silencers" but without losing the traditional charm of the sewing machine that used our grandmother.
It is the main piece of the workshop, but you do not have to leave all your savings in it. Learn using a simple and basic sewing machine.
The Cutting Board
Do not underestimate the need for a cutting board when working at the seam. You will need a comfortable height for you; it is your workshop after all. The more personalized the table is, the easier to keep intruder hands away from your working sanctuary.
If the sewing machine is your money-making machine, your cutting table is then the place where you prepare everything before turning it into money!
It should be spacious and for that reason, a dining table may never fit into what you need. It is best to buy the surface table and, after that you have this main component, adapt the table legs so that it is at your ideal height.
The best organization for the workshop is with the cutting table to the center and the machine to the side or at the head of the table, always looking towards the front door of your workshop.
White tables are as good as black tables for work. They allow easier visualization of the pins and also the thread on them. Plus machines always come in those colors.
Finally; remember that the idea of having the table in the center is to be able to walk to it. Each of the four walls of your workshop should contain some of the materials mentioned above.
A wall where the scissors will be next to several fabrics organized in cylinders. A small birdhouse shelf where the pins and your favorite needles will be.
A shelf that allows you to appreciate the different colors of the threads you have available and, always include your finished work. These works will not only serve as a sample for potential clients, they will also be an inspiration and a reminder of what you can achieve with your effort.
