Creating a wallpaper border design in a computer

Create the design of your wallpaper on your computer to the edge that separates the ceiling from the wall or simply to place it in the middle of the wall. It is very simple! I could give you a design class with the different programs I use but; in reality that would go against the principles of our DIY philosophy. What I can do, however, is explaining the different scenarios that you could find and how to overcome them to help you. The idea is that by your own means you could discover how far you can and want to get. So what do you think if we start with that edge wallpaper?

A Decorative Element Made by You

There are two programs that I use for the creation of this type of designs; although they have their similarities, both are extremely different and no, one of them is not Paint. Nevertheless I do some awesome Paint drawings. I do not want to bother you with technical terms or hard-to-understand images of what it is supposed to show up on your computer. I will give you a series of tips in the way I wish someone would have given them to me when I was doing these sort of the designs the first time. So this goes; from my little experienced decorator’s mind, on computer matters, to you. Of course; I may not be an expert in digital design, but I have the basic skills that allow me to realize the patterns as I want them. Sometimes that implies a great reduction of both monetary and mental load, because you avoid having to deal with a third party who will surely have their own vision. Without going around the matter anymore; then let's talk about the main difficulties that you will find in the design and how you must overcome them. The idea is that after this article; you can do your own work in a practical and efficient way.

Choosing the program to design

The first thing I learned was that these programs really demand our computers a lot. Many of the computer resources, such as RAM and Video memory, immediately turn into design work to the point that it can "freeze the screen". For that reason I recommend you get the portable or light versions of design software that you will find on the. That way you can save big space in the memory of your computer and; best of all. you can take the program with you everywhere on a USB stick.

The keys to obtaining the best result

I think the first thing is to ask you the following

Do you plan to print border wallpaper in your home or do you just want to design it and take it to a specialized center?

I make this question because; as you will suppose already, depending on your response the way you should design could vary a little in order for the work to be more effective. If you plan to print it at home then you should most likely use A4 size sheets; they are the most common type of sheets that all printers support. However; I personally recommend two things: - Do not print at home. Unless it is a laser printer which finishing quality is decent, or highly is detailed. - Do not print on typical A4 sheets but on glossy sheets. The reason for these two recommendations is simple: the quality of the printing, the sharpness of the printing can be greatly undermined if the work is sent through a basic printer. Whether you like it or not, no matter how sharp the design looks on your LED display, the finished product on paper can be horrible and; if you are going to print the wallpaper for the edge of an entire room, you will spend resources very recklessly. Resources you could use to work more accordingly with the type of printer you have. So, my suggestion is that you take the design already prepared by you, to a center that specializes in printing these kinds of things. They not only have the paper that best fits; they also have the equipment to carry out this work. As if it was not enough, although the idea of DIY is great

Did you really plan to stick sheet by sheet all over the edge of the room? If so, then you are more patience than me.

Designing step by step

All right! You have already chosen the program; now comes the part where you fight with the program and all those little icons that come along with it. The first thing is to create a new file, a "layer" as it is known in the world of graphic design. The good thing about this point is that you can choose the exact size you want, that is; You can now take the measurements from wall to wall and empty that information into the size of the image to create. In this way you will get a blank canvas with the exact measurement you have placed, so you can see the final work in a panoramic way; something very useful when it comes to working with patterns that have a kind of continuity. Many modern artists who are dedicated to mounting canvases with "photographs" use this technique. First work the piece in a panoramic way and then, when they have already decided how many canvases they want; they start to cut that piece in different sizes that fit like a puzzle

That's the best secret kept for so much modern art out there!

I'm explaining the same technique but; applied to the design of edge wallpaper. The next step is to search for the image. Would they be flowers, a landscape, and many animals, something Toilé de Jouy style? Whatever your design, once you have chosen the image just select it open in a new window, and in that new window of your computer. Use the right mouse button to access additional options.

Find the copy image option.

You don’t even have to save it in your computer so you can take it to your blank canvas! Just go back to the design program and select paste. Some people use the keyboard shortcut where they press the keys: Ctrl and then V. That way the image will also stick on the canvas of the design program. Only now the most fun part comes! Moving the design! From one side to another. Move the image upwards in order to leave inside the canvas only the part that you like the most about the image you selected. If you want to give continuity or a sense of repetition, just press Ctrl+V and a new copy of the image will be placed over the work you have already done previously. So you can add the same image over and over again to give that continuity to the wallpaper until culminating the end of the canvas. Do not be afraid of the program. With the things I have explained; you can save the work once you have filled all the blank spaces and have it printed. But you can browse in the different buttons to add effects or default designs that come with the program. Original images can be modified. You can change tonality and even cut on specific parts of it. I’ve learned a lot just by doing things I’ve already explained to you, but I told you everything in the way I wish someone had done it for me.

Hope I have helped you!
